Extent of Income Inequality Survey Analysis

The Youth Affairs Council of South Australia (YACSA) developed the “Income Inequality” survey as a way to gauge the level of income inequality felt by young people compared to the rest of the community. The survey was completed by 209 young people from across the state.

Key results:

  1. Around three quarters of respondents (74.8%) reported living on a low income.

  2. Nearly half of respondents (49.4%) reported that their source of income was casual or part-time work.

  3. Just over a third of respondents (36.6%) reported receiving Centrelink payments and 52.7% reported their Centrelink income was Youth Allowance.

  4. Almost 21% of respondents reported not being able to access medical care when needed.

  5. Around 40% of young people reported not being able to afford dental care.

  6. Respondents suggested that in order to assist young people living in poverty, governments could provide a range of incentives for business to employ and retain young people, provide employment and training transitions programs, ensure affordable housing options and to make government income support allowances accessible based upon personal circumstance rather than age.
